Museo della Ceramica

The Museum of Ceramics of Savona was established on the premises of the former Monte di Pietà charity founded in 1479 by Pope Sixtus IV of Savona. The museum chronicles the fruits of a tradition which has been ongoing for over six centuries in Savona and Albisola, which together constitute one of the oldest and most important centres for ceramics in the Mediterranean. The museum itinerary stretches over four floors. The display opens a window onto the fascinating world of ceramics: from fifteenth and sixteenth century tiles (‘laggioni’), majolica inspired by oriental porcelain, exemplars of the more well-known Baroque style, the rise of the decorative in the eighteenth-century, the technological evolution of the nineteenth century, right up to and including the field of contemporary artistic research.
