Tovo San Giacomo is a characteristic agricultural centre in the Maremola Valley. Its name derives from tuvu, or tuffa stone, and has about 2,500 inhabitants. The hills, predominantly rich in olive groves, have characteristic shades and silvery reflections due to the cultivation of ‘ornamental greenery‘ that perfumes the valleys.

Walk along one of the many paths through the woods and terraces, with views ranging from the sea to the Pre-Alps and the Ligurian Alps – a real gem for nature and outdoor enthusiasts.

Of interest are the ruins on the Folchi hill and the parish church of San Giovanni Battista in Bardino Vecchio, remodelled in modern times but flanked by a 14th-century bell tower.

The Monumento al Cristezzante, the only one of its kind in Italy, has recently been set up, while a short distance away is the clock museum, Museo dell’Orologio da Torre G.B.Bergallo, a cultural highlight of the Maremola valley. This museum houses real time machines, with mechanisms, hands and clocks that continue to mark the time for the village and its inhabitants.
